VDOT Maintained Roads - Snow Removal Guidelines
For a forecast of 0-2" of snow, high-volume roads are treated/plowed up to 12 hrs after the storm ends, residential streets are sanded as needed.
For a forecast of 2-4", high-volume roads are treated/plowed up to 18 hrs after the storm ends, residential streets are treated/plowed up to 36 hrs after the storm ends.
For a forecast of 4-8", high-volume roads are treated/plowed up to 36 hrs after the storm ends, residential streets are treated/plowed up to 48 hrs after the storm ends.
For a forecast of 8-12", high-volume roads are treated/plowed up to 2 days after the storm ends, residential streets are treated/plowed up to 3 days after the storm ends.
For a forecast of 12-18", high-volume roads are treated/plowed up to 3 days after the storm ends, residential streets are treated/plowed up to 4 days after the storm ends.
For a forecast of 18+", high-volume roads are treated/plowed up to 4 days after the storm ends, residential streets are treated/plowed up to 6 days after the storm ends.
For a forecast of ice/freezing rain, high-volume roads are treated/plowed up to 12 hrs after the storm ends, residential streets are treated/plowed up to 18 hrs after the storm ends.

For a forecast of 0-4" of snow, roads are sanded as needed up to 24 hrs after the storm ends.
For a forecast of 4-8", roads are plowed up to 48 hrs after the storm ends.
